Our Dovetails

Our unique Dovetail joint method provides superior durability and results in a clean, gap-less joint.

The Dovetail joint is an improvement upon the old method of joining intersecting timbers. Traditionally timbers framing would be cut with a U shaped notch and the two pieces would slide together, but this can result in splitting and leaves a gap on either side of the notch.

Our unique Dovetail method provides superior durability and results in a clean, gap-less joint. The beam, rather than U-notched, is actually two pieces with our Dovetail joint on either side, which then slides into the reverse of that notch on the post. The Dovetail is both tapered and beveled resulting in a snug joint, which only gets tighter when other pieces are placed on top.

There are many reasons why our Dovetail joint is preferred over other methods. For one, it is just fun to put together! Rather than trying to hold pieces up and bolt them at the same time, the Dovetail joint just slides together making installation easy like putting together Lincoln Logs. Our beams are also notched, so there is no guessing on placement of the rafters. This also gives the rafters more support and minimizes twisting.

The Dovetail joint can also be used in other areas besides intersecting beams. For example, to achieve a modern clean look rafters can be Dovetailed into the beams, and would not require any visible fasteners. The options are endless! For a custom design on a unique idea, give us a call and a design specialist will be able to assist you. More often than not we are able to give you a quote right over the phone in just a few minutes!

We have many other great options including our “Rustic” style, which is a 2-beam pergola, and utilizes what we call a “Tongue and Groove” beam-to-post connection. Take a look at the different styles we offer, and give us a call if you have any questions!

Along with our unique Dovetail method, every timber frame structure we make is customized for our clients. One way you can customize your structure is with a unique end cut.
